Maserati 3500 GTI - classic Gran Turismo with a trident

In the mid-fifties, a new segment of sports car buyers emerged. Entrepreneurs, stars and the otherwise successful thirsted for fast, luxurious sports cars. They didn't want to race, they wanted to drive fast on the increasingly well-developed road network. With the 3500 GT model, the sports car company Maserati presented exactly the right car for this segment, confirmed by its success on the market. In the mid-fifties, a new segment of sports car buyers emerged. Entrepreneurs, celebrities and the otherwise successful thirsted for fast, luxurious sports cars; they didn't want to race, they wanted to drive fast on the increasingly well-developed road network. Maserati, or rather its engineer Giulio Alfieri, quickly recognized this trend and built an elegant two-plus-two-seater sports car that combined existing technology with new ideas. And new ideas were needed at a time when Maserati was suffering from severe financial problems. In 1958, Automobil Revue wrote: "One of Maserati's assets is a car that was only assembled a year ago and has now reached a remarkable degree of maturity within this relatively short time, namely the 3 1/2-liter Gran Turismo. This impressive six-cylinder is a luxurious two- to four-seater car for fast journeys. According to factory specifications, the 240 hp engine is capable of a top speed of up to 230 km/h."
