Imperial became an independent brand in 1955. With the Imperial luxury brand, the Chrysler Group wanted to compete against the strong competition in the luxury vehicle segment. The Imperial models were extensively equipped and excellently finished. This article presents the models of the first generation.

Chrysler was always a pioneer in terms of technology and, thanks to Virgil Exner's "Hundred Million Dollar Look" in the mid-fifties, was just shedding a somewhat staid image. The first-generation Imperial was the first test of the new design language. In 1955, they embodied the best that was available from Chrysler at the time. To ensure the processing quality of the Imperial, they had a separate production line. The line ran much slower and allowed workers to spend more time on details. At first glance, however, the first-generation Imperial hardly differed from its Chrysler brothers: the New Yorker and the Windsor.
