The last Ford Escort with powered rear wheels was built between 1992 and 1996, although the front wheels were also supplied with engine power. The Escort RS Cosworth attracted attention with its huge rear spoiler, but also with its sports car-like performance and also ensured great success on the rally tracks. Even the name promises great things. Ford RS models were already causing a sensation in the late sixties and early seventies. Roger Clark, Timo Makinen and Hannu Mikkola were the drivers behind the steering wheels of the rear-wheel-drive Escort TC, RS 1600 and RS 1800 models, and they were responsible for many successes on the international rally tracks. The Escort, also known as the "dog bone" in its basic form due to its radiator grille, also proved to be a true successor to the Ford Cortina Lotus on the racetrack. Two series with rear-wheel drive were built until 1980; the second series also produced the popular RS2000 model, which was able to compete with the Opel Kadett GT/E and VW Golf GTI.
