Summary
Fiat built the 500 model for 20 years and the former entry-level car has become one of the most popular classic cars of all time. However, its success was not guaranteed, as Fiat took some risks when building it and buyers soon preferred larger and faster vehicles. But the Fiat 500 remained true to itself and gained (many) new fans. To this day. This driving report describes the history of the Fiat 500 Nuova and shows it in historical and current pictures, as well as in the sales brochure from back then.

When it was launched in 1957, the Fiat 500 Nuova was an extremely modern and at the same time extraordinarily compact passenger car for little money, just the thing for Italy in the late 1950s. But success came in installments, and north of the Alpine ridge, car buyers took even longer to recognize the talents of the little Fiat. The Fiat Topolino was the Turin-based car manufacturer's most successful model. From 1936 to 1955, over 500,000 variants were produced, so it was no wonder that the successor was not an easy choice. For this reason, the front-engined Topolino was basically replaced by two models, namely the Fiat 600 and the Fiat 500 Nuova. There were many options to choose from when it came to technology, but it was clear that the new car should be a car for the people, affordable, practical and trouble-free.
