Summary
Long before the VW Karmann-Ghia was created, the Beutler brothers had already built an elegant coupé and a pretty convertible based on the VW, which probably only failed to achieve great success because of the high price. Few cars were built and even fewer have survived. One was recently restored and now shines in new splendor. This vehicle report portrays a Beutler VW Coupé from 1958 and shows it in many photographs.

Preview (beginning of the article)
When Fritz and Ernst Beutler presented their sports car based on the VW Beetle in Geneva in March 1954, there was no VW Karmann-Ghia. The elegant creation, which shone as a coupé and cabriolet on the Beutler stand, had a modern pontoon dress and hardly anyone would have guessed that the pretty aluminum body concealed a staid VW with a 1.2-liter engine and 31 hp. People would certainly have queued up if the little car hadn't cost more than a Porsche. The Beutler brothers were not newcomers when they presented their VW sports car. After all, they were already working on the 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A F chassis back in the 1930s, which won the "Best of Show" prize at the Concours d'Elégance in Pebble Beach in 2015. Ernst Beutler actually completed his apprenticeship as a car mechanic with Hans Ramseier at Carrosserie Worblaufen, where the same Isotta Fraschini was given a new livery before being shown in Geneva and Cannes in 1933.
