When prices started to rise and cars in the upper mid-range were difficult to sell, Peugeot went back to the drawing board and created a car with the 504 look and 404 technology, the 504 L. For the French, "L" does not mean luxury at all, but refers to the standard version, which is, however, very complete in the French manner. The price difference to the 504 GL is almost 2,000 marks, but this is even more significant: The 504 L is only 300 marks more expensive than the ancient Peugeot 404 GT, which still enjoys good demand in France due to its sophistication. The 504 L costs 10295 marks, which is an acceptable price in this class.
