Summary
Station wagons were already popular in the USA in the late 1950s. Chevrolet presented an extreme version in 1954, the "Nomad" based on the Chevrolet Corvette. However, the production version was then based on the Chevrolet Bel Air and Impala models, initially three-door and later five-door. This report portrays a Chevrolet Nomad from 1960 and tells the story of its development.
This article contains the following chapters

Preview (beginning of the article)
A "Nomad" was shown to the public for the first time in 1954. This was a pure show car with a station wagon rear end based on the Corvette. Automobil Revue wrote at the time: "The appetite for the familiar Corvette has not yet been satisfied, and several further developments are already appearing on the schedule. At the Motorama exhibition, the "Nomad" (Station Wagon) was seen for the first time, a compromise between the sporting spirit of the Corvette and the number of children in the average family that wants to go out in full force; the Nomad is (or will be) a closed car that has lost much of the beauty of its role model. The body runs without a step to the rear in an arc that strongly distances the rear windows from the vertical. Public opinion is still being sounded out. If the public wants the Nomad, it will be built."
