Among the numerous exhibits in the Deutsches Museum is a very special gem, "Car No. 1", the Benzwagen from 1886. This historically most valuable automobile was donated to the Deutsches Museum by its creator Karl Benz in 1908 so that it could be preserved for posterity. This ingenious motor car concept was responsible for realizing mankind's age-old dream of the self-propelled car because, as the eminent English automobile historian St. John C. Nixon so aptly put it, it "set the wheels of automobilism in perpetual motion". Benz created the completely new "prototype of a car without horses", in which the chassis and drive unit are united to form an organic whole.
