From the late 1980s onwards, convertibles enjoyed great popularity and car manufacturers not only cut up their coupés or saloons, but also built their own model series of open-top vehicles, mostly of a sporty nature. BMW also launched a successful model in 1995 with the Z3, but of course sooner or later a successor was needed. The first wave of open-top leisure cars such as the BMW Z3, Mazda MX-5, MG F and Fiat Barchetta were soon followed by the higher-end Mercedes-Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster and Audi TT Roadster. BMW was also not averse to these higher standards and deliberately positioned the Z3 successor somewhat higher.
