Racy foal from a proven stable: BMW 700 Coupé

The BMW 1500 had been hoped for, but the much more compact BMW 700 came along. With this four-seater coupé, BMW completed its already extensive product range in 1959 without blocking the space for a future mid-size sedan. The coupé was well received at the first sighting and people were convinced that the BMW 700 would make its mark. So now the mystery of the fantasies about a new BMW that have been haunting the trade press for a long time has been solved! It was - at least this time - not the expected mid-range car of 1500 cubic centimeters that was sent to the start in the derby of the expected big crowd at the Frankfurt Motor Show. BMW, the Munich plant with the great racing tradition, whose name has always embodied something like a concept of race and sporting class, instead sent a 'fast colt' to the starting line. Even the exterior of the BMW 700 Coupé clearly shows which group of buyers this car is aimed at: those for whom driving a car is not just an affluent substitute for the much-maligned streetcar, but who also have neither the desire nor the means to keep a sporty car as a second car alongside a four-wheeled means of transportation.
