Summary
With the 1800, Munich returned to the 'fast' tradition: the friends of the white-blue brand were once again able to show the rear end to the motoring public! This hobby article from 1963 describes what the BMW 1800 was all about from a contemporary perspective, but also where it still had some shortcomings, illustrated with lots of historical images and sales literature from the time.

Those who could hear the grass growing already knew that the mid-range BMW would be available in a more powerful version even before it had really arrived. The rumor arose because so much time passed between the first presentation of the car and its actual appearance. During this time, the competition had not been sleeping either. And when the BMW 1500 wanted to play the solo role in the upper mid-size class that it was actually intended for, there were already all sorts of similar cars on the roads that were not simply utility cars. The beautiful 150 km/h that the 1500 was capable of could also be achieved with a Taunus 17 M TS; perhaps also with the Fiat 1500 and even more so with the Peugeot 404 E. And for the price of the BMW, for around 9500 marks, you could get a Fiat 2300, albeit without heating, and with 102 hp it ran its 160. But the actual opponents were considerably cheaper: the Taunus for around 1500 marks, the Fiat 1500 even for 2300, the Fiat 1800 still for 500, the Peugeot 404 for a good 1000 marks. Now, it's no disgrace for a car that the competition is giving it a hard time - they'll know why.
