AIfa Romeo and BMW launched new models on the mid-range market in 1972, the Alfetta and the BMW 520/520i. In this case, too, the old saying applied: if two do the same thing, it is still not the same. Because: BMW was content to switch from sporty speed to comfort and also retained its basic technical concept (front engine, rear-wheel drive, independent rear suspension with trailing arms), while the Italians took a huge step forward with the Alfetta. In memory of the Alfetta, which was so successful in the Grand Prix in the 1950s, not only was a legendary name revived, but also many of the technical achievements associated with it. Alfa's new model no longer had a rigid axle at the rear - like most of its predecessors - but a de Dion rear axle to which the gearbox and clutch of a differential were flange-mounted. This unit distribution ensured optimum weight ratios.
