In the summer of 1966, car rental company Hertz offered a 306 hp Ford Mustang with manual transmission and racing brakes to America's automatic gearboxes, power steering and power amplifiers for a bargain price. Who could have guessed that the stunt would end in a fiasco? This article tells the story of the Shelby GT 350-H and shows one of the black and gold racers in many photos.

Imagine you could get a race-ready GT4 touring car for a better tip from the car rental company at the airport instead of a gray mid-range sedan with basic equipment - with a bucket seat, slick tires and racing brakes. Instead of a detailed introduction to the special features of such a thoroughbred racing car, which differ from those of a civilian car, you are only briefly told how to shift up and down. Oh yes, and please don't drive on the race track. Have fun, have a nice day. Wouldn't you be tempted? Of course you would. But what car rental company would be so naive as to willingly hand over an overpowered precision bullet for underpowered everyday driving?
