How many car brands were and are there? Obviously at least 16,595!
In an unprecedented amount of hard work, author Marian Suman-Hreblay spent decades collecting information and details on a total of 16,595 brands of passenger and sports cars from 110 countries, which have been produced from 1770 (Cugnot steam cars) to the present day. These are presented in alphabetical order in this thick book.
Brand by brand
Each brand entry usually includes: name, country of manufacture, year of foundation and, if known, production time, company name and location. If known: Car type and occasionally key data on the company history.
Example
Martini CH 1897-1934
Frauenfeld (1897-1903) St. Blaise (1903-1905) ...Ltd St. Blaise
(1905-1906) Hills-Martini (1906-1908) Ste Nouvelle St. Blaise
(1908-1911) Neue Martini AG, St. Blaise (1911-1933)
Touring and Sports Cars
The first three pages contain a list of the numerous helpers who contributed information and data, an introduction for users, the number of makes per country and a brief description of the various types of car.

At the end of the work you will find a selection of the most important books and magazines used as well as a list of useful Internet addresses.
Huge fund
No other known reference work contains anywhere near as many brands. The author is to be congratulated for his tireless work, patience and perseverance.
However, it is also clear that this book will probably only be of interest to the greatest enthusiasts of automobile history as well as documentation centers, editorial offices of specialist publications or museums (this is in contrast to the "Dictionary of Coachbuilding", also created by Marian Suman-Hreblay).
The price is certainly not exorbitant for the wealth of data, but anyone expecting pictures will be disappointed, as these are not and were never intended.
