The city of Geneva has announced that it will impose driving bans on cars that are not clean enough from 2020 if air quality is particularly poor. The driving ban will be controlled by stickers in the colors green, purple, yellow, orange, red and grey, which all drivers who want to drive in Geneva (in poor air conditions?) will have to buy by March 2020.
Older cars with high pollution levels will then be banned. According to reports, this will primarily affect diesel vehicles, at least for the first two alert levels. Petrol cars will only be shut down at the highest alert level.
According to a report on "SRF 4 News" radio, exceptions will only be made for the fire department, transport for the disabled and diplomatic vehicles.
Exceptions, such as those in Paris for classic cars (regardless of drive technology), have not yet been communicated by the administration in Geneva.
It is currently expected that such driving bans will only have to be imposed on a few days a year.
Note: According to green-zones.eu, the implementation will be as follows:
"Geneva, the second largest city in Switzerland, has decided to introduce an environmental zone from January 15, 2020. This is a temporary zone that will be activated a few hours in advance during an air pollution peak and will then apply between 6:00 and 22:00. One of the reasons for this measure is the high number of deaths caused by air pollution. In 2018, this amounted to around 3,000 throughout Switzerland.
Depending on the emission class of the vehicle, a corresponding Stick'Air vignette ("Macaron") will be required to enter the canton of Geneva from 15.01.2020, based on the French Crit-Air model, which will then be distributed by the authorities at cost price. Failure to comply with the new environmental regulations may result in fines of CHF 500, with a grace period until March 31, 2020. In addition to the approximately 220,000 passenger cars registered in the Swiss canton of Geneva alone, these regulations also affect cars and trucks from outside Switzerland. There are only exemptions for emergency vehicles, cabs and cars for people with disabilities."
