Anyone using the Swiss motorways will be able to choose the form of vignette in future. On August 1, 2023, the electronic vignette (e-vignette) will be introduced alongside the adhesive vignette in a dual system. At its meeting on June 16, 2023, the Federal Council approved the necessary total revision of the National Roads Toll Ordinance (NROO) and decided to bring it into force together with the revised National Roads Toll Act (NROA) on August 1, 2023.
Since its introduction in 1985, the national road charge has been levied in the form of an adhesive vignette. With the introduction of the e-vignette, this will be supplemented by an electronic form of collection. In future, drivers will be able to choose whether they want to use an adhesive vignette or the e-vignette when using the motorways.
Unlike the adhesive vignette, the e-vignette is not linked to the vehicle but to the number plate. This benefits owners of interchangeable number plates and people who buy a new vehicle during the year.
From August 1, 2023, the e-vignette can be purchased at any time and from any location via a web portal of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS). Adhesive vignettes can still be purchased at the usual points of sale and at freeway border crossings. The sales price of CHF 40 and the period of validity from December of the previous year to January of the following year remain unchanged for both variants.
The total revision of the NSAV, which was approved by the Federal Council at its meeting on June 16, will make the necessary adjustments required by the introduction of the e-vignette and the associated revision of the NSAA.
The responsible FOCA will provide detailed information on distribution and implementation before the introduction of the e-vignette on August 1, 2023.
