From February 3 to 7, 2027, Rétromobile will take over Paris Expo Porte de Versailles for a new edition dedicated to automotive history. This year, the official poster pays tribute to the Volvo brand, whose centennial the show is celebrating with a dedicated exhibition in the heart of Pavilion 4. Set against a graphic background in the Swedish colors (yellow, blue, and gray), the red coupe stands out as it drives along a stylized road that reflects the show’s motto: “The past always has a future.”
The star of the poster: the Volvo P1800S
The choice of this model to embody the Swedish manufacturer’s centennial is no coincidence. Unveiled at the 1960 Brussels Motor Show, the P1800S coupe is one of those vehicles that transcended its status as a mere automobile to become a true cult icon. The coupe, which gained widespread popularity thanks to Roger Moore in the TV series “The Saint,” owes its place in legend to another man: Irv Gordon.
A P1800 Like No Other
Irv Gordon, owner of a 1966 P1800 S, was so in love with his car that he drove 1,500 miles (2,414 km) nonstop within 48 hours of purchasing it. With an average daily mileage of 200 kilometers on his daily commute, his red coupe had already clocked over 804,000 km on the odometer after ten years.
In 1998, with 1.69 million miles on the odometer, he was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest mileage driven by a single owner in a passenger car. That was just one milestone: In 2002, Irv Gordon—still with the original engine—crossed the two-million-mile mark in Times Square under the watchful eyes of the international press.
Then he set out to meet one final challenge: reaching three million miles before his 73rd birthday—a goal he achieved in September 2013 in Alaska on the legendary Seward Highway. When Irv Gordon passed away in November 2018, his odometer read exactly 3,260,257 miles—more than 5.2 million kilometers that he had driven in this very car.
Irv Gordon’s red P1800S, currently on display in the Swedish exhibition area of “World of Volvo” in Gothenburg, will be showcased at Rétromobile, where it will represent a century of Swedish innovation and reliability alongside about ten other legendary Volvo models.
