The proud starting price of 7,000 euros was already an exclusive price for the four-page menu card from 1932. After just a few tense minutes, the price went way up. Interested parties from Germany and abroad engaged in a fierce bidding war on the telephone until auctioneer Marcel Seidel was finally able to knock it down to its new owner at 61,000 euros (including buyer's premium 72,614 euros).
The most expensive dinner card in the world?
"This is definitely the most expensive dinner card in the world," said auctioneer and expert for rare automobilia Marcel Seidel from the well-known auction house Seidel in Ladenburg. "This price is a sensation even for die-hard Ferrari fans," adds Seidel.
Marcel Seidel's auction house has specialized in automobilia and vehicles since 2001. From the outside, the dinner card from 1932 (lot number 1541) looks more like an advertisement for an Italian red wine.
However, if you open the four-page menu card, the inside shows an invitation in Italian to the final dinner of the 1932 racing year "La S.A. Scuderia Ferrari ai suoi Piloti e Collaboratori".
As in the previous year, the invitation was sent to the Ristorante Boninsegna in Modena. "At the moment, only this one card from 1932 is known; there are just a handful of examples from 1929, 1930 and 1931, all of which are in collectors' hands," comments Seidel.
All results of the auction with more than 2800 lots can be found on the auction house's website.
