The 90 cars that RM Sotheby's will be auctioning in Miami on February 27 and 28 have been estimated at a total of 100 million dollars. A Ford GT40 that took part in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans is expected to fetch a tenth of that amount. However, the contribution of starting number 4 to the magnificent Ford one-two-three victory was quite small: Mark Donohue and Paul Hawkins retired on the twelfth lap with rear axle damage.
The result of chassis number P/1032 at the 1966 12 Hours of Sebring was much more impressive: In Florida, Mark Donohue and Walt Hansgen finished second in the best Holman-Moody GT40 - behind Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby in a Ford entered by Shelby-American. After 57 years in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, the copper-colored GT40 Mk II, which still bears the livery and starting number of its Le Mans entry, is to find a new owner.
24 millionaires
At eight to eleven million dollars, No. 102 is the most valuable lot in the RM auction in Miami, but by no means the only one in the million-dollar range. According to the auction house, a further 18 cars are expected to achieve a price of at least seven figures. The upper limit of the estimate is even higher, with 23 further lots exceeding the million mark. Remarkable: six of them are pre-war vehicles. According to experts, the most expensive car behind the Le Mans participant will be the Mercedes 150 hp Semmering racing car from 1908, which has been estimated at seven to nine million dollars.
The total of 24 large financial calibers ensure that the average estimated price per lot is 1.1 million dollars. But even below that, the price level in Miami is very high. It is estimated that just four cars will definitely go for less than 100,000 dollars. According to the auction house, it is at least possible that another four will go for five figures.
With an estimated price of 25,000 to 35,000 dollars, a Vespa 400 is likely to be the cheapest lot. The four five-figure lots also include a "Fuelie", a '57 Chevrolet Corvette with the 283 HP fuel-injected engine, which is expected to fetch between 60,000 and 80,000 dollars.
Unique pieces from the museum collection
But you can also spend almost a hundred times as much for a '57 Corvette. The Chevrolet XP-64 - later officially referred to as the Corvette SS - which also comes from the collection of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, is expected to fetch five to seven million dollars. The one-off was created on the initiative of Zora Arkus-Duntov and was intended to compete in international motorsport, but only drove one race (12h Sebring 1957) before General Motors withdrew from racing.
Another unique piece from the museum is Spirit of America Sonic I. In November 1965, Craig Breedlove reached a record speed of 966.4 km/h (600.6 mph) on the Bonneville Salt Flats with the vehicle, which was powered by a jet engine. Difficult to price as a car with little mass appeal, the estimated price range of 500,000 to 1 million dollars is quite high.
Only a quarter of the two pre-war Alfa Romeo racing cars are originals. In other words: The 8C 2300 Spider with touring body is a completely new construction by Pur Sang; the 6C 1750 Spider has original technology from 1930, but only later had its Zagato body fitted. At 700,000 to 900,000 dollars, the half original is valued significantly higher than the full replica for 475,000 to 575,000 dollars.
Germany dominates
With 18 lots, Porsche once again has the highest share of the offer. They are joined by two Porsche-based creations from Ruf: an RT12 ($ 400,000-600,000) and a CTR3 ($ 1-1.3 million). Two front-engined convertibles form the entry into the Stuttgart range: a 944 S2 ($ 40,000-50,000) and a 968 ($ 100,000-150,000). At the other end are two Porsche 959s: a "normal" one ($ 5.5-6.5 million) and one modernized by Canepa ($ 3-3.5 million) with 825 hp!
Hidden among all the super sports cars - a Carrera GT and a 918 Spyder are also on offer - is a rather inconspicuous rarity: RM Sotheby's will be auctioning off one of only 14 Porsche 968 Turbo S cars built in Miami. At an estimated 550,000 to 750,000 dollars, it is likely to be around ten times more expensive than a conventional 968 coupé.
At Mercedes-Benz, for once the most expensive lot is not a 300 SL ($1.4-1.7 million). At 2.75 to three million dollars, the 540 K Cabriolet A clearly outstrips it. The addition "by Sindelfingen" in the catalog seems more important than it is. It simply means: factory bodywork.
On average, the cars on offer are 53 years old, covering a period from 1906 (Züst 28/45 PS Spider, $ 800,000-900,000) to 2023 (Porsche 911 Sport Classic, $ 500,000-650,000).
