The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 has long been an icon of automotive history, unique and unforgotten. 50 years after its world premiere, the Porsche Museum is celebrating it with the special exhibition "Spirit of Carrera RS". Since September 20, 2022, everything at Porscheplatz in Zuffenhausen has been dedicated to the "Entenbürzel", "RS" or "2.7", as Porsche enthusiasts like to call the sports car.
With front and rear spoilers
When the RS was presented at the Paris Motor Show on October 5, 1972, it was the first production car in the world with front and rear spoilers. The requirements for the 911 base vehicle for racing and rallying were clearly defined: it had to be light and fast. To achieve this, Hans Mezger and Valentin Schäffer redevelop the 2.7-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with fuel injection.
In the sports version, the 210 hp and 960 kg coupé accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, with a top speed of just under 245 km/h. The aerodynamics, which were already precisely designed for racing cars at the time, still make the RS unique today. "It is the most direct technology transfer from motorsport to series production there is. This has not changed to this day and is part of Porsche's living tradition," says Andreas Preuninger, Head of GT Vehicles.
The whole story in the museum
The Porsche Museum tells the story of the RS and its motorsport brother RSR not only with vehicles and anecdotes, but also with films, photos, racing posters and interactive elements. Those who turn the model detail and color wheel of the kaleidoscope, for example, can put together their own individual RS.
In order to meet as many wishes as possible, Porsche remains true to the principle of individualization options with the Carrera RS 2.7. This means that buyers can choose from a wide range of colors and equipment variants. The demand surprised the sports car manufacturer, which had originally planned 500 series-produced examples for homologation.
From development vehicle to production-ready Porsche
At the center of the special exhibition is a bright yellow 911 Carrera RS 2.7 in Touring trim, as well as a rare test car in metallic green. The vehicles, development documents, advertising brochures, price lists, the Carrera lettering and an article from the customer magazine Christophorus describe the path from development vehicle to production-ready Porsche.
Visitors can also look forward to seeing special members of the Entenbürzel family from the past five decades. With the 911 (964) RS and 911 (993) RS duo, Porsche is expanding the RS family with air-cooled sports cars. The water-cooled era is represented by the 911 (996) GT3 RS, 911 (997) GT3 RS, 911 (991) GT3 RS and 911 (992) Sport Classic models.
The latter is a collector's item from the Heritage Design series from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur with a fixed rear spoiler.
