The readers of Auto Bild Klassik voted the 1963 Porsche 911 "Classic Car of the Year" by a large margin in the "Sports Cars and Coupés" category. With 9,471 votes, the 911 received twice as many votes as the runner-up in its 50th year. The new Porsche Cayman was also honored: 4,659 readers voted it the "Classic of the Future" in the same category.
Achim Stejskal, Head of Historical Public Relations and Porsche Museum, accepted both awards at the ceremony at the BMW Museum in Munich. "We are delighted that this almost unique mid-engine coupé is already able to inspire so many classic car fans," emphasized Stejskal. The Porsche 911 can already look back on a particularly long tradition, he continued. "With seven generations and over 840,000 units as well as countless race wins, the 911 is more successful than almost any other sports car."
A total of 26,882 Auto Bild Klassik readers voted for their favorites for the fourth time in five categories: Classic Car of the Year (Winner Sedans: Mercedes 600; Convertibles/Roadsters: Mercedes Benz SL R113; Small Cars and Compacts: VW Beetle; off-road vehicles: Land Rover 90/110), classic of the future (winner saloons: Mercedes S-Class W222; convertibles/roadsters: Jaguar F-Type; small cars: BMW I3), the find of the year (winner: BMW 323i from 1979), the restoration of the year (winner: Goliath GP 700 E sports coupé) and the person of the year (winner: rust fighter Michael "Mike" Sanders).
