Carrera ...
... this term is as much a part of the Porsche vocabulary today as "Turbo" or "911". Its roots lie in the race victory of a Porsche 550 Spyder at the legendary Carrera Panamericana in Mexico in 1954. The racing engine used was unique and went down in automotive history as the "Carrera engine". Designed by Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann, it was extraordinarily powerful thanks to its four camshafts and was used with great success in a whole series of famous Porsche racing cars, starting with the 356 Carrera and extending through the 550 and 718 Spyder to the 904 Carrera GTS.
Together with two extraordinary authors, the Porsche Archive has taken on the history of this racing engine and its vehicles: Rolf Sprenger was a Porsche employee for 40 years and describes in extreme detail the technical development of the "Fuhrmann engine" used from 1953 to 1965, making its technical finesse impressively accessible to laymen and experts alike. In addition, countless never-before-seen documents and photos from the factory archive are shown - a unique look behind the scenes of the then still young Porsche brand, complemented by interviews with contemporary witnesses directly involved.
In addition, the American Porsche specialist Steve Heinrichs has researched all the racing entries - around 14,000 - of all Porsche racing sports cars with Carrera engines, so that this book is the first to provide a complete history. This means that all chassis and engine numbers with delivery status and motorsport history are now also documented.
