The configuration in which a Mercedes-Benz model was originally delivered is recorded in a so-called “birth certificate,” which can now be ordered directly from the manufacturer. These certificates, based on archival records, can be issued for all classic cars from 1986 onward and youngtimers built through 2010.
The “birth certificate” is delivered in a specially designed presentation folder. As the starting point of the vehicle’s history, it serves as a useful supplement to the service booklet, owner’s manual, invoices, and other documents. Such manufacturer certificates are already available from Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, BMW, and Volkswagen, among others.
Factory Condition
The “Birth Certificate” summarizes the original vehicle configuration as recorded at the factory: Vehicle Identification Number (FIN; VIN for U.S. vehicles), make, model, and body style; delivery date; engine and transmission numbers; paint color; interior trim; and factory-ordered optional equipment. Any modifications, conversions, repairs, restorations, or replacements of vehicle parts made after delivery are not taken into account. No inspection or technical examination of the specific vehicle is conducted
It is available for all passenger car model series from 1986 through 2010, including various E-Class and S-Class generations, the SL and SLK, as well as the A-Class, C-Class, and R-Class. AMG models, vans, and Smart models are not covered.
“With the certificate of origin, we’re making information from our archives accessible to owners of classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles. It documents the vehicle’s condition at the time of delivery—including equipment and colors—as well as relevant vehicle data, thereby creating a direct link between the individual vehicle and its history. For many enthusiasts, the certificate of origin itself becomes a collector’s item,” says Alexandra Süss, a member of the management board of Mercedes-Benz Heritage GmbH.
New Edition
The certificate of origin can be ordered online through the Mercedes-Benz Classic Store. The price is 130 euros, including shipping. To obtain the certificate, you’ll need the vehicle identification number and proof of ownership; once the documents are received, delivery typically takes about five business days.
By the way: The Group Archives previously issued such certificates from 2001 to 2010. The first certificate, numbered A 00001, for a white 280 SL “Pagode,” was personally presented at that time to Board Member Jürgen Hubbert by Harry Niemann, Head of the Group Archives at DaimlerChrysler. At the end of 2010, the certificates were discontinued because, according to the company, this product no longer met market conditions. After that, customers could only order a detailed manufacturer’s report or a copy of the vehicle data card.
