Almost exactly to the day, 60 years ago, on October 30, 1963, the first Maserati Quattroporte was presented at the Turin Motor Show. This marks the 60th anniversary of the luxury sports saloon, which has written automotive history over six generations.
It is an anniversary that commemorates some of Maserati's most important milestones, as the Quattroporte is one of the brand's most distinctive expressions. From stylistic evolution to innovation and technical breakthroughs, the Quattroporte embodies a long journey in exclusive automotive engineering. The luxury sports saloon also established a new automotive segment.
Sporty elegance
Since its debut in the early 1960s, the Quattroporte has been widely acclaimed and inspired subsequent generations. The vehicle pushed boundaries, reinvented itself and remained true to the pursuit of excellence in design and performance. In these 60 years, more than 75,000 units have been produced.
The first generation model was a pioneer. In addition to a distinctive-sounding eight-cylinder engine from motor racing, its refined interior offered the comfort of an elegant saloon.
Positioned over the years as a "living room on the move" or "saloon with racing spirit", the first generation reached a top speed of 230 km/h.
The Quattroporte is representative of the passion and talent of all those involved in the project over the years: Frua created the original shape, followed by other masters, including Bertone, Giugiaro, Gandini and Pininfarina - right up to the Maserati Centro Stile as the designer of the current generation. A whole family of engineers, mechanics, test drivers and designers brought the car from the blueprints to the road. The Quattroporte is and remains the jewel in the Modena-based company's rich history.
All good things come in threes
While the second-generation Quattroporte was a less memorable design, the Quattroporte III - the company was headed by De Tomaso at the time - was a resounding success.
A new challenge followed, which was mastered with aplomb in the 1990s with the fourth generation.
With the multi-award-winning Quattroporte V from 2003, the brand continued to develop, but remained true to its successful formula, before the current, sixth generation represents the most modern version of the concept. After all the redesigns, the advances in technology, the changes in the company structure and the countless models produced, this saloon has retained its strong claim to exclusivity.
Charismatic appearance
In the garages of the most demanding drivers, with kings and princes, as an accessory in memorable films (the Quattroporte can be seen in more than 60 productions), photographed in front of red carpets or accompanying the highest political celebrities at events, the Quattroporte was and is popular with important personalities from all sectors.
It became a mainstay of the automotive landscape in the 20th century and remains so in the new millennium.
