Indeed, there was official news on Friday, March 8, 2013: Renault-Alpine, together with partner Caterham, is building a new chassis for the #36 LMP2 race car that will compete in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans under the Signatech team. The gearbox and engine will continue to be supplied by Nissan and will therefore be listed as an Alpine-Nissan racing car.
The rumor mill is buzzing, with various sources from the village of Le Mans reporting a possible return of Renault to the 24 Hours of LeMans classic. Journalists are rumoring that the timing would also be perfect: the new Alpine vehicles are scheduled to go into production in 2015, a historic moment for the brand that should be celebrated in motorsport terms.
Although Renault is not commenting on these rumors, things are still bubbling away: the president of the A.C.O. is set to make a very important announcement at an official press conference next Friday.
Stay tuned!
