At the Grossglockner Grand Prix on September 22 and 23, 2017, Hans Joachim Stuck will drive a replica of the historic Auto Union Type C racing car from Audi. In 1938, his father Hans Stuck won the Grand Prix in the Auto Union Type C special hillclimb car.
From 1936, the Auto Union Grand Prix car was powered by 16 cylinders, six liters of displacement and 520 hp, enabling top speeds of over 300 km/h. The model was also very successful in the hill climb races, which were very popular at the time, thanks to its drivers. Hans Stuck won with his Auto Union Type C on August 28, 1938 on the Grossglockner. On the 12.6-kilometre route with 92 bends and 14 hairpin bends, the racing driver overcame 1,258 meters in altitude and achieved an average speed of 74.67 km/h. Hans Stuck also became known as "The Mountain King" with further victories in hill climbs up until the 1960s.
Historic racing cars have been racing on the Grossglockner again since 2012. This year's event also features a replica of the Auto Union Type C. Hans Stuck's son Hans-Joachim Stuck will take the wheel of Hans Stuck's winning car. He will be wearing his father's original racing goggles and gloves on his laps of the 1938 Grand Prix circuit. Rides in the Auto Union Type C are something special for "Striezel" Stuck. "Sitting in my father's car is always very emotional for me. Now the Grossglockner too - I'm really looking forward to it," says the former Formula 1 driver and Audi driver.
Another pre-war Auto Union racing car awaits visitors to the Grossglockner Grand Prix. In the paddock, Audi Tradition will be exhibiting the 1936 Auto Union Type C and the 1939 Type D Doppelkompressor. Its 12-cylinder engine produced 485 hp from a displacement of just three liters and accelerated the car to a top speed of 330 km/h.
