The classic film "Bullitt" famously had two main characters who raced through San Francisco in breathtaking car chases: Steve McQueen and the Ford Mustang Fastback.
Lost until 2018
The Mustang was long thought to have been lost, but resurfaced in 2018(see our news item at the time), just in time for the 50th anniversary of the blockbuster. At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, it could be admired in the spotlight again for the first time.
There were two movie Mustangs
The two Ford Mustang Fastback S-Code were purchased by Warner Brothers for film production in 1968. Now up for auction is the so-called "Hero Car" in which Steve McQueen drove. Compared to the stunt vehicle, which was heavily modified at the time, this Mustang was only slightly optimized for the film.
Sold to employees
After the film was completed, a Warner Brothers employee at the time bought the Mustang and sold it again in 1970. After that, several other owners are known. Apparently the vehicle was used as an everyday car, it was not kept in a museum and was not restored. At the end of the 1970s, Steve McQueen is even said to have contacted the owner at the time and wanted to buy the car back.
Auction in January 2020
This legend on wheels will be auctioned off at Mecum's Kissimmee Auction between January 2 and 12, 2020 in Florida, USA. It is expected to be the most expensive Mustang ever.
No estimated price has been given for the auction.
