The Museum Art.Plus in Donaueschingen is showing the exhibition Dietmar Henneka and Friends - A Picture of a Car in its 2-RAUM from June 30 to October 13, 2019.
Stuttgart-based photographer Dietmar Henneka (*1941) has compiled and arranged more than 70 photographs by international photographers, including some of his own works. The photographs from the years 1928 to 2012 document the history of the automobile, but above all focus on the close relationship between man and car. World-famous fashion and advertising photographers present the car in elaborate stagings.
Other masters of their craft thematize it as an object of movement and capture the fleetingness of a moment. They are all united by the desire to capture the mechanical design object that so defines our everyday lives with greater intensity, to bundle associations and lend visibility to collective memories. The density of the exhibition thus illustrates in a special way the interaction between technology and media aesthetics and at the same time refers to the very close connection between the automobile and photography in general.
The motif is always Mercedes-Benz car models. The spectrum ranges from the staid family estate car to the legendary 300 SL Gullwing, the sports car icon of the 1950s. This is no coincidence, as the brand is inextricably linked to the history of the automobile, which began in 1886 with the Benz Patent Motor Car Number 1.
The show complements the main exhibition Full Throttle Full Speed, which will be showing works by international artists on the themes of speed and cars in combination with classic sports cars until January 19, 2020.
On display are photographic works by Dieter Eikelpoth (1950-2015), Elliott Erwitt (*1928, US), Esther Haase (*1966), Peter Lindbergh (*1944), Jean-Daniel Lorieux (*1937, FR), Russell Porcas (*1961, UK), Paolo Roversi (*1947, IT), Anton Stankowski (1906-1998), Alberto Venzago (*1950, CH), Reinhart Wolf (1930-1988) and others.
