Porsche presented the new 935 at the historic motorsport event Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca Raceway. The 515 KW (700 hp) racing car, whose bodywork is reminiscent of the legendary Porsche 935/78, will be produced in a small series of 77 units. "This spectacular car is Porsche Motorsport's birthday present to fans all over the world," says Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Head of Motorsport and GT Vehicles. "As the car is not homologated, engineers and designers did not have to follow the usual regulations and were therefore able to develop freely."
In memory of "Moby Dick"
The technology of the racing car for club sport events and private racetrack training sessions is based on the 911 GT2 RS high-performance sports car. As with the historic model, large parts of the body have been replaced or supplemented with add-on parts made of carbon fiber composite material (CFRP). With its streamlined rear end, the 935 extends to a length of 4.87 meters. In width, the exclusive club sport racer measures 2.03 meters.
The spectacular aerodynamics are a completely new development and a homage to the Porsche 935/78 Le Mans racing car, which was nicknamed "Moby Dick" by fans due to its elongated shape, massive widenings and basic white color. The striking wheel arch vents on the front fenders, which can also be found on the GT3 customer sports car 911 GT3 R, increase the downforce on the front axle. The 1,909 millimeter wide and 400 millimeter deep rear wing ensures aerodynamic balance.
Many details of the exterior cite successful vehicles from the company's own motorsport history: While the aerodynamically clad rims are reminiscent of those of the 935/78, the LED tail lights in the end panels of the rear wing are based on the 919 Hybrid LMP1 racer. The exterior mirrors come from the current Le Mans-winning 911 RSR, while the exposed titanium exhaust tailpipes are based on the Porsche 908 from 1968.
These quotes continue in the cockpit. The gear selector lever has a laminated wood look and is reminiscent of racing models such as the 917, the 909 Bergspyder or the Carrera GT super sports car. The 935 takes the carbon steering wheel and the color display behind it from the 911 GT3 R of the 2019 model year.
A solid safety cage combined with a racing bucket seat and six-point seat belts ensures maximum safety. A second seat for the passenger side is available as an option. An air conditioning system ensures optimum interior cooling.
Modern technology
The new 935 is powered by an ultra-modern 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with biturbo charging, which is largely identical to the high-performance standard unit of the road-legal 911 GT2 RS. The power of the rear engine is transmitted to the 310 millimeter wide rear wheels via a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) with rigid suspension.
As in the GT road models of the 911, the driver uses conveniently placed paddles on the steering wheel to shift gears. The typical 911 weight distribution ensures excellent traction and braking behavior. On the front axle, six-piston aluminum monobloc racing brake calipers in combination with internally ventilated and slotted steel brake discs with a diameter of 380 millimeters ensure outstanding deceleration values. Four-piston callipers and 355-millimetre discs are installed on the rear axle.
Like the road-legal 911 GT2 RS, the 1,380-kilogram 935 is equipped with the PSM (Porsche Stability Management) driving stability system including traction control and an anti-lock braking system (ABS). The driving assistance systems can be adjusted separately or switched off completely depending on the respective driving situation using a so-called map switch on the center console.
Not a bargain
The new Porsche 935 can be ordered immediately at a price of 701,948 euros plus country-specific VAT. Customers will receive their vehicles from June 2019 as part of exclusive delivery events.
