It didn't take place every year, but when the racing cars took to the small circuit near Hittnau and the old planes landed on the nearby airfield, visitors flocked to the popular event, which was held for the last time in 2018 and was canceled in 2020 due to coronavirus.
Unfortunately, there will also be no more Oldtimerclassic Hittnau, as the official statement explains:
"For safety reasons, the organizer Motor Sport Club (MSC) Hittnau can no longer hold the traditional motorsport event Oldtimerclassic Hittnau. The fixed traffic dividers on the Tösstalstrasse no longer permit safe operation.
The canton, municipality and MSC Hittnau were actually in agreement. On the Tösstalstrasse between Hittnau and Saland, road safety was to be improved with traffic dividers at the Hasel and Schönau junction. Only the "how" differed. While the canton wanted to install the traffic dividers permanently, the MSC requested a version with "demountable" traffic dividers. They were to be dismantled every two years for the event and then reinstalled. The MSC was even prepared to cover any additional costs. Over 2000 people signed a petition, but unfortunately this did not help, the canton stuck to its standard details until the administrative court, where it was upheld.
The Oldtimerclassic Hittnau was unique worldwide in its diversity. From the Corso for everyone, motorcycles, racing and formula cars, go-karts, autocross and racing trucks on the circuit to the airplanes and helicopters at our "Hittnau International Airport". There was a lot of flying activity. Air show and acrobatics programs were shown. The Patrouille Suisse was even announced for a demonstration in 2020.
The event was popular with families and motorsport enthusiasts. Various world, European and Swiss champions such as Luigi Taveri and Randy Krummenacher as well as Formula 1 legend Clay Regazzoni were at the start in Hittnau.
It is with sadness that we end the glorious history of the Oldtimerclassic Hittnau. MSC Hittnau would like to thank all spectators, participants, local residents and landowners, the many helpers, sponsors, patrons and authorities for their support. It was a wonderful time, which is now unfortunately coming to an end."
It's a shame that Switzerland is losing another well-established classic car event!
The website is still in operation, where you can also find reviews of past events.
