This is also relevant for classic car and youngtimer enthusiasts: More young talent in the motor vehicle trade.
The number of newly concluded training contracts in the German motor vehicle trade rose significantly again last year. According to statistics from the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BiBB), automotive companies in Germany concluded a total of 26,709 new training contracts by the reporting date of 30 September, which is 5.1 percent more than in 2021. The automotive professions in Thuringia and North Rhine-Westphalia saw particularly strong growth. While there was an overall decline of 2.2 percent in the skilled trades, 21,588 young people chose the training occupation of "automotive mechatronics technician". This corresponds to growth of 4.3 percent compared to 2021 (20,697). 5,121 trainees want to become automotive salespeople, which is even 8.5 percent more than in 2021 (4,722). In the previous year, the profession had already grown by around 10 percent.
Opportunities for recruiting junior staff
"The number of apprenticeships in the automotive professions has grown significantly faster than the average for the entire dual training sector," says Birgit Behrens, ZDK Managing Director of Vocational Training. "With the "Initiative AutoBerufe - Zukunft durch Mobilität" toolbox, we are providing our companies with a successful instrument for recruiting young talent. Strong training is a good way to combat the shortage of skilled workers and shows how attractive the professions and topics such as e-mobility, digitalization and networking are in the automotive industry," says Behrens. In total, the German automotive industry is currently training around 92,460 young people in technical and commercial professions.
More mechatronics technicians in Schleswig-Holstein
For Schleswig-Holstein, the figures for automotive mechatronics technicians also look positive: 837 new training contracts have been reported as of September 30, 2022. A good sign for Jan-Nikolas Sontag, Managing Director of the State Association of the Automotive Trade: "There continues to be a strong interest in training in the automotive world in the true north. The number of training contracts for mechatronics engineers in particular has risen, by twelve percent compared to 2021. Young applicants are recognizing the numerous further training opportunities for a successful career, such as becoming a self-employed master mechanic, a manager in a car dealership or in a master workshop."
