A Porsche for under 20,000 at a major international auction? Yes, that is possible. For the 1999 Boxster with lot number 202 at the "Porsche Air|Water Auction", Broad Arrow quotes an estimated price of just 12,500 to 17,500 dollars. This puts the first lot of the auction well below the 460,000 dollars calculated as the average of all 61 cars on offer. With a 1980 SC and a 2002 Targa, there are even two 911s that are expected to remain in the five-figure range.
At the other extreme is a 918 Spyder with Weissach package, which has been estimated at between 4.5 and 5.5 million dollars, thus contributing around one sixth of the total expected 25.5 to 30.6 million dollars. Remarkably, only one other "normal" Porsche - the word is relative in this context - is in the million-dollar range: a GT3 RS 4.0 from 2011.
The others are restomods or tuning vehicles: a 959 SC rebuilt by Canepa is expected to fetch between 3.2 and 3.6 million dollars; a Ruf SCR is expected to fetch between 1.9 and 2.3 million dollars. Finally, there are two Singer reinterpretations for 1 to 1.3 million dollars each.
At 32 years old, the cars on offer are comparatively young, but the catalog also features five 356s, including three Speedsters from 1957 and 1958 ($225,000-475,000). Surprisingly few early 911s with a short wheelbase are represented: there is exactly one. The bali blue coupé from 1965 is expected to fetch between 190,000 and 230,000 dollars. The same body with two fewer cylinders is already available for a good two-thirds of the money: a dolphin gray 912 from 1965 is expected to reach 140,000 to 160,000 dollars.
If you only look at the estimated prices without reading the vehicle descriptions, you will initially think of a typo at 375,000 to 525,000 dollars for a 1979 Turbo. However, the silver-grey coupé has only covered 772 miles (1242 km) since it was delivered. A Turbo that has already had its first oil change is available for half that price or less: either as a flat-bodied coupé ($ 200,000-240,000) or as a first-hand convertible from California ($ 150,000-170,000).
With a factory performance upgrade, it gets more expensive again: a slate gray turbo with 330 hp and 65,000 kilometers is expected to fetch 375,000 to 425,000 dollars.
The price level for models in the 993 series is strikingly high. Only two are expected to be under 200,000 dollars. A 911 Turbo S with WLS 2 in "Vesuvio Metallic", estimated at 575,000 to 625,000 dollars, marks the top of the list. Two Carrera 4S - one with WLS, one without -, a Turbo and a conversion based on the Carrera RS are in the range between 225,000 and 325,000 dollars.
