When the average age of the cars at an auction is 118 years, it typically takes place around the London to Brighton Run and at Bonhams. On November 1, 2024, the auction house on Bond Street will put 14 cars from the early days under the hammer for a total of just under one million British pounds. Each car is therefore expected to fetch around £69,000.
However, the auction will be introduced by over 170 automobiles, including instruction manuals, postcards and bicycles from the turn of the century.
London to Brighton candidates
As is well known, the maximum year of manufacture for London to Brighton participants is 1904, and seven of the 14 cars would meet this requirement. However, the conditions of entry also require perfect proof of age and originality, so potential buyers should take a closer look before they strike.
The most expensive car, a Darracq 12 HP Twin-Cylinder Four Seat Side-Entrance Tonneau from 1904, seems to be one of those cars that fulfill all the conditions. As it is also a fast-moving vehicle with a two-cylinder engine, it is valued at £ 180,000 to £ 240,000.
A Renault 6 CV Type T Voiturette from 1904 should also be eligible, as it has taken part in previous events. Here, £40,000 to £60,000 is sufficient for entry.
Younger cars too
The youngest car at Bonhams on November 1, 2024 is a Lagonda 11.1 HP Four Door Tourer from 1914, which is looking for a new owner for £ 17,000 to £ 22,000.
A Sunbeam from 1912 and a Daimler from 1911 are only slightly younger.
The oldest carriage, however, is a Clément-Panhard 4/4 1/2 HP Dos-à-Dos Light Do Cart from 1900, which was delivered new to Scotland and has also taken part in London-to-Brighton runs in its 124-year existence. An estimate of £ 60,000 to £ 70,000 has been set here.
It is definitely worth taking a look at the 14 cars, because a glance at the many pictures and the descriptions of the cars almost feels like a visit to a museum.
