On the occasion of the Concours d'Elégance Amelia Island, Bonhams will auction 79 vehicles, including a Vespa sidecar and a motorcycle, on February 29, 2024 from 12:00 noon. The vehicles have been estimated at a total of USD 19.3 million, so USD 243,753 is expected per car/motorcycle. 33% of the lots will be sold without a reserve price.
32 Manufacturer
Cars (and two/three-wheelers) from 32 brands are looking for new owners on February 29, 2024; on average, the vehicles are 57 years old.
Porsche is most strongly represented (14 cars), followed by Mercedes-Benz (9) and Ferrari and Jaguar (5 each). All other brands are represented by less than a handful, and exotic manufacturers such as Atlas, Napier and Saxon by just one vehicle.
Younger Porsches
On average, the Porsche sports cars on offer are only 39 years young, although there are also two 356s on offer. However, the majority of the cars are significantly younger.
The most expensive cars in the auction are two Porsches that are not even youngtimers yet, namely a 2004 Carrera GT (USD 1.425 to 1.55 million) and a 2015 918 Spyder Weissach (USD 1.75 to 2 million).
If this is too expensive for you, you can also get a Porsche for less. For a 996 from 1999, USD 55,000 to 65,000 is expected, for a 928 from 1978 USD 40,000 to 50,000.
Ferraris to drive
Ferrari sports cars are even younger on average than Porsches.
Nevertheless, there are two real classics, namely a Dino 246 GT from 1971 (USD 340,000 to 400,000) and a 308 GTB Vetroresina from 1976 in a very elegant paint finish (USD 175,000 to 225,000).
Two Testarossa/512 TRs, an F355 Spider and a 575 Maranello complete the range of sports cars from Maranello that are perfectly suitable for everyday use.
Fast saloons
If you are looking for spaciousness as well as suitability for everyday use, you should take a look at two fast Mercedes-Benz saloons.
For the classic car fan, there is a 300 SEL 6.3 from 1970 for sale (USD 100,000 to 120,000), for the youngtimer fan a 500 E from 1992 (USD 55,000 to 65,000).
British rarities
In addition to many super classics and American cars, four British cars stand out somewhat on Amelia Island.
Two Morgan from the sixties, a Plus 4 Super Sports from 1961 (USD 100,000 to 125,000) and a Plus 4 Plus from 1966, the super-rare plastic coupé, (USD 140,000 to 160,000) are looking for new owners.
Also rare is the Daimler SP250 from 1963, which, also with a plastic body, is now looking to fetch USD 40,000 to 50,000.
And then there is the 1959 Lister-Chevrolet Costin Sports Racing Two Seater racing prototype, which with its elegant sports car body and powerful V8 engine could provide a lot of fun on the racetrack, but wants to be rewarded accordingly with USD 800,000 to 1 million.
Pretty close to the original
It doesn't always have to be an original to be fun to drive. Sometimes originals are almost impossible to find or immensely expensive. Bonhams can offer several cars that look (and probably feel) like "the real thing", but can be purchased at a significantly lower price.
The series begins with a 1965 Fiat 500F, a "Jolly Beach Car" designed to bring joy to the beach and now likely to be available for USD 35,000 to 50,000.
A Porsche 911 SC from 1980, which an enthusiast has converted into a Carrera RS in viper green, is somewhat more expensive. USD 90,000 to 120,000 is the asking price.
Really big money is to be paid for two British cars whose role models were responsible for great racing successes, a Bentley Speed Six in "Le Mans" livery from 1929 (USD 900'000 to 1.2 million) and a Napier L48 Samson from 1904 (USD 900,000 to 1.1 million), as it took part in Gordon Bennett races around 120 years ago. Yes, even replicas don't have to be cheap.
Of course, Bonhams in the USA is not lacking in interesting vehicles of American provenance. Two Stutz, several Chevrolet Corvettes and two Cobras are sure to generate a lot of interest.
More information and more pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the Bonhams website.
