Auction house Bonhams is once again supporting the Zoute Grand Prix and Concours with an auction on Sunday, October 8, 2023. 96 cars, a selection of motorcycles and children's cars as well as some automobilia will be on offer.
The cars are valued at a total of EUR 34.1 million and are on average almost 41 years old.
54 percent of the cars will go under the hammer without a reserve price, including more expensive and younger cars.
Aston Martin and Porsche
The Aston Martin brand is most strongly represented at the Zoute auction with 25 cars, although they are on average only 30 years young, which is mainly due to a selection of orange-colored sports cars from the new millennium.
15 cars bearing the Porsche badge are 36 years old on average, while the ten Mercedes-Benz cars are slightly younger with an average age of 31 years.
The nine Ferraris are on average 45 years old, of which only two cars are sold without a minimum price, while the no-reserve percentage is significantly higher for the aforementioned brands.
Six BMWs, four Bentleys, Bugatti and Jaguar complete the larger contingents, while only one car each from Siata, Saab, Lamborghini and Audi will go under the hammer.
The Ferrari Tour de France with Swiss racing history
The most valuable car in the auction is a Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta "Tour de France" from 1959 with chassis number 1401GT. This long-wheelbase coupé was the 77th car of this type to be built. The first owner was Luigi Taramazzo from Italy. He drove it at Monza on June 29, 1959 and finished ninth, then won the Garessio-Colle San Bernado hill climb on July 19, 1959.
He then sold the car to Gérard Spinedi from Geneva. He entered the car in the Marchairuz and Vaduz-Triesenberg hillclimb races, finishing second twice.
Spinedi also actively used the car in the following year, including at the Rallye de Genève and the Mitholz-Kandersteg hill climb. He also competed in the Coupes des Alpes, finishing 12th in the GT class. The coupé changed hands several times in Switzerland, with Karl Hasler and Plinio Haas, among others, treating themselves to the beautiful car. The latter used it in many races around the Ferrari Shell Historic Challenge and the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.
A few years ago, the 250 TdF was completely restored and subsequently also received Ferrari Classic certification.
EUR 5 to 7 million is now expected for this historic car.
The Alfa Romeo with Graber bodywork
Hermann Graber did not body too many Alfa Romeo 6Cs, chassis 915.163 is probably the only chassis that was given a two-seater roadster body in Wichtrach. However, it was not built on a brand-new chassis, but on one that already had a touring body, which had been damaged during the bombing raids in the Second World War.
Today, the car is back in the configuration specified by the first buyer, Ernest Morf. In the meantime, Graber had changed the front himself, which was reversed as part of the restoration between 2020 and 2022.
The Alfa is now set to change hands for EUR 550,000 to 750,000.
Trendy young sports car classics
In Knokke-Heist, Bonhams can offer a whole range of super sports cars that are currently in particularly high demand.
There is a Bugatti EB 110 GT from 1994, for example, which is looking for a new owner for EUR 800,000 to 1.2 million.
The 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, for which Bonhams is expecting EUR 850,000 to 1.1 million, falls into the same category.
The 918 Spyder from 2018, which is expected to cost EUR 600,000 to 900,000, comes from the same manufacturer.
Experts have estimated a value of between EUR 500,000 and 600,000 for a 1993 Jaguar XJ220.
Few pre-war cars
There are only five pre-war cars in Zoute's lot list, two from Bugatti and two from Aston Martin.
The 1929 Bugatti 37 in particular, with an estimate of EUR 1 to 1.4 million, raises high expectations, while the 1927 Type 40 will be available at a slightly lower price.
The 1931 Aston Martin 1.5 Litre International is a Le Mans contender that is looking for a new garage for EUR 800,000 to 1.1 million. The 1.5 Litre Mark II from 1934 will be somewhat cheaper.
And then a BMW 327/328 Sport Cabriolet from 1939 completes the list; it is expected to cost EUR 160,000 to 200,000.
Two convertibles from Citroën, two coupés from Maserati
Friends of open Citroën and closed Maserati are served several times over.
Citroën offers a DS 21 IE Cabriolet from 1972, as well as the particularly rare Chapron-Le Caddy Cabriolet from 1961 based on the DS 19.
Trident coupés are available as the Sebring from 1963 and the Mistral 4000 from 1966.
In addition to these classics from Citroën and Maserati, there are of course many other super classics on offer, otherwise the average value of the vehicles on offer would hardly exceed EUR 300,000.
Examples include a Lamborghini Jarama S from 1972, a Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato from 1959 and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1958.
The Saab EX Prototype from 1997, on the other hand, is rather unusual, although it is road-legal and drivable and is said to cost EUR 60,000 to 90,000.
Further information and many photos can be found on the Bonhams website.
