After the auction had to move to Gstaad last year, the Bonhams Auction, which is based in western Switzerland, will take place again on June 18, 2023 at the Bonmont golf course in Cheserex. There will be 61 vehicles on offer, two of which are motorcycles. On average, the vehicles are around 35 years old, with only one dating back to the pre-war period. The total value of the vehicle lots has been estimated at CHF 15 million, so each vehicle is expected to fetch around CHF 245,000.
Aston Martin and the others
Cars from the Aston Martin brand are the most strongly represented. However, the 13 sports cars and limousines are on average only 22 years old.
The eight Rolls-Royces are significantly older, namely 51 years old, while the seven Mercedes-Benz cars are only 20 years old on average. The six Porsches and five Ferraris are also less than 30 years old.
Three quarters of the vehicles are offered without a reserve price, a very high proportion for a Swiss auction.
Old against young
The offer can be divided into two categories, which are almost equal in size. 29 cars are classic cars, the rest, including the two motorcycles, are youngtimers or neoclassics, i.e. less than 30 years old. At 27, the proportion of vehicles built after 2000 is above average for an auction.
The most recent (and most expensive) car is a Bugatti Chiron from 2020, which is expected to cost CHF 2.5 to 3 million, while the youngest car is also a Bugatti, but from 1929.
Almost like new cars
It is rare to see so many cars with such low mileages at an auction.
In fact, more than a dozen of the cars have at most three-digit mileages, including several more recent Porsches, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé from 2014 (105 km), an Aston Martin Vantage GT8 from 2016 (250 km), a Ferrari 599 SA Aperta from 2011 (350 km), an Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf from 2015 (223 km) or a Ford GT from 2018 (750 km), to name a few examples.
But even more mature classics are competing with low mileage, such as a 2007 Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Roadster with 11,800 km, a 2000 Aston Martin DB7 V12 Vantage with just under 11,000 km or a 1992 Lamborghini Diablo with 3350 km.
If you like buying cars that have hardly been driven, Bonmont is the right place for you.
Inexpensive and special Rolls-Royces
Five different Silver Cloud models from Rolls-Royce are vying for the bidders' favor in Cheserex, including two of the popular "Chinese Eye" coupés, but also three limousines.
Anyone who has always wanted a Rolls-Royce from the fifties or sixties could have their dream come true here, not least thanks to the high "no reserve" proportion. The estimated values are between CHF 30,000 and 200,000.
The special Bugatti 44
A Bugatti Type 44 from 1929 with a Gangloff body had been in the same ownership since 1966. Under the long hood was an in-line eight-cylinder engine without a supercharger. Its approximately 100 hp should still be enough for speedy locomotion today.
The car is exceptionally well documented and perhaps somewhat less spectacular than the Grand Prix Bugattis, but more roadworthy and almost more special. CHF 300,000 to 500,000 has been estimated here.
Some super classics
Of course, Bonhams in French-speaking Switzerland is not short of super classics.
They range from the Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS Touring from 1957 (CHF 120,000 to 180,000) to the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith from 1952 (CHF 30,000 to 50,000), with a rare Alvis TC21/100 Graber Coupé from 1955 (CHF 85'000 to 100,000), a Monteverdi 375/L High Speed from 1970 (CHF 70,000 to 100,000), but also a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1972 (CHF 450,000 to 500,000) or a Ferrari F40 from 1990 (CHF 2 to 2.5 million).
Two classic Porsche 911s are also represented, one of them a Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 (CHF 350,000 to 450,000).
The Lamborghini Diablo has already been mentioned, but there is also a highly unusual Lamborghini Urraco P300 from 1975, which was fitted with different wheels, more power and modified suspension at the factory in accordance with Silhouette specifications (CHF 25,000 to 45,000).
Entry-level options
There are also affordable cars for sale at Bonhams in Bonmont, many of which are less than CHF 100,000. In fact, the estimated values of more than half of the vehicles are in the five-figure range. An MGB GT V8 from 1971 is already available for CHF 8,000 to 14,000.
For a restored Citroën 2 CV6 from 1986, you should have CHF 20,000 to 30,000 ready. An Aston Martin DB7 from 2000 is already available for CHF 40,000 to 60,000, a Porsche 911 SC 3.0 from 1981 for CHF 40,000 to 60,000. Almost without exception, all five-figure cars are auctioned without a minimum price, who knows ...
More information and many pictures of the individual cars can be found on the Bonhams website.
