Automobili Lamborghini and the Italian National Police are celebrating the 20th anniversary of a collaboration that began in 2004 with the delivery of a Lamborghini Gallardo. Since then, this partnership has seen the Italian State Police benefit from a range of high-performance vehicles used as valuable tools in patrols and medical missions.
Gallardo 510-4 (2004-2005)
The collaboration began in 2004, when Automobili Lamborghini delivered the first Gallardo 510-4 to the Italian National Police. The first organ transport with it was carried out in September of the same year. This model was the first production Lamborghini with a five-liter V10 engine featuring advanced dry sump lubrication, double overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, variable valve timing (four per cylinder) and chain-driven timing.
The Gallardo was assigned to the Stradale unit in Rome and was in service for four years. During this time, it covered around 140,000 kilometers on patrol missions in central and southern Italy as well as on urgent medical missions. Equipped with traffic monitoring devices, the Gallardo was able to identify dangerous driving behavior, recognize license plates and transmit real-time images to operations centers.
In 2005, a second Lamborghini, also a 510-4, was delivered for use in the region around Bologna. This had similar equipment for traffic monitoring and, as an important addition, a refrigerated compartment in the trunk for urgent organ transportation.
Gallardo LP 560-4 (2008)
In 2008, the first Gallardo was replaced by the Gallardo LP 560-4, an updated version with increased performance and advanced technology. With a 560 hp 5.2-liter V10 engine, permanent all-wheel drive for maximum dynamic stability, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h, this successor to the Gallardo proved its worth in service with the Italian state police.
It was assigned to the central and southern regions and operated mainly along the highway from Salerno to Reggio Calabria. The front trunk was also equipped with a refrigerated compartment for rapid organ transportation and a defibrillator to support emergency medical operations and save lives.
In addition to daily operations, the Gallardo took part in numerous prestigious events such as the traditional police parade in Rome. It also served as a support vehicle in classic car races such as the Targa Florio and the Milano Sanremo Rally. One of the earlier models even represented the colors of the Italian state police in New York and took part in the Columbus Day parade in 2004 and 2005.
A total of six vehicles were in service with the Italian state police over a period of 20 years. Each of them was equipped with specific features and advanced technologies developed to support security and emergency operations. The result was a partnership rich in stories and significant events.
