On October 26, 2014, the MAC - Museum Art & Cars in Singen opened the new exhibition "Andy Warhol. CARS." In addition to selected classic cars from the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection, around 40 works from Warhol's Cars series are on display. The Group commissioned the vehicle portraits from the American pop artist to mark the centenary of the automobile in 1986. Cars and the corresponding paintings are being exhibited together for the first time in Singen.
The MAC claims to have scored a real coup with the juxtaposition of motifs and illustrations. MAC founder Hermann Maier: "I have long had the idea of combining these cars and these pictures in an exhibition. So many top-class pieces in Singen - that's quite something!" The automotive icons not only have character under the star, some have even been given nicknames. For example, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Collection on display includes the 300 SL, which was nicknamed "Gullwing" in English-speaking countries because of its strikingly shaped gullwing doors. Rarities such as the C 111 prototype or a Silver Arrow from 1939 will also be on display at the foot of the Hohentwiel.
Not only the vehicles, but also the art is from the first rank. "Andy Warhol's appeal is unbroken," says Anna-Lena Bruns, Museum Director of the MAC. "The fact that we can bring these powerful works from the Daimler Art Collection together with the vehicles here in Singen is nothing less than a sensation for me."
The exhibition "Andy Warhol. CARS" can be seen at the MAC - Museum Art & Cars until September 20, 2015.
