A quarter of a century ago, the first RS model saw the light of day at Audi. With an incredible 315 hp (232 kW) for the time, the sporty Avant RS2 was naturally also a great temptation for ABT Sportsline. A stainless steel exhaust system, modified turbocharger and adjustable camshaft were the ingredients for a performance increase that was quite something. In the end, 360 hp (265 kW) was on the vehicle registration certificate.
If horsepower were a currency, you would have to invest significantly more than 500 horsepower today, based on the historical inflation rate, to get the same driving pleasure. At ABT Sportsline, the math works out: Those who bought an ABT RS4+ limited to 50 units in 2019 even received 530 hp (390 kW). ABT also offers this performance package for the 2018 and 2019 RS4 in general.
Preparations are also already underway for the completely new version with gasoline particulate filter. The aim is to achieve identical performance and, of course, the same beguiling sound that has always characterized the V6 biturbo. The first examples will soon be arriving in Kempten.
Family reunion
But back to the ABT RS2 and ABT RS4+ family reunion, which took place on an airfield. There, the well-known tuner for VW and Audi brought the two together for a photo shoot and, of course, explored their respective potential.
"The journey began in 1994 with the Audi RS2, built with Porsche participation. It was one of the first estate cars that could compete with genuine sports cars and played a decisive role in the success of this vehicle category at Audi," enthuses CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt about the old days.
While he then returned his rare historical collector's item to the company's own vehicle collection in Kempten, the ABT RS4+ was received by its new owner a short time later.
The ABT RS2 is certainly already a classic, but only time will tell whether the modern RS4+ will manage the same.
