When the historic rally world gathers again in Daun on the last weekend in July (July 27 - 29, 2023), fans can look forward to a top-class field of starters. Just two weeks after the entry list for this year's ADAC Eifel Rallye Festival was opened, not only had the maximum 150 available starting places been reached, but more than 200 entries had already been received. "Of course, we are very happy about this incredible recognition of our work, but it is a pity for everyone that we have to cancel now," explains organization manager Otmar Anschütz from the organizing MSC Daun with one laughing and one crying eye. Reinhard Klein, who as the head of Slowly Sideways is responsible for putting together the starting field, adds: "Unfortunately, this huge rush means that not everyone can be there every year. But the diversity of the cars mentioned also has an advantage: we can put together a very attractive field of participants for the fans."
The first stars have announced their arrival
In addition to the automotive contemporary witnesses, who are the real stars in the Vulkaneifel, their former drivers are also drawn to the international class reunion of the rally family. There are firm commitments very early in the year. Harri Toivonen, who failed last year due to the technology of the Lancia Delta S4, would like to present himself to the fans this time with a Škoda Fabia R5 on all the demonstration routes. Audi Tradition is once again bringing two treasures from its museum to the Eifel. One of them will be driven by Harald Demuth. This means that the two-time German rally champion will not have to switch to a two-wheeler. Because he had promised, "if I don't have a ride, I'll come by bike. Maybe I'll even get a starting license with it." The Belgian Bruno Thiry, 2003 European Champion and long-time World Championship starter, will be competing in an original car from Wolf-Dieter Ihle's collection.
Nicky Grist, world champion in 1993 alongside Juha Kankkunen, is sitting on the "wrong" side this time: he is again driving the original Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD with which they were successful back then. Finnish rally professor Rauno Aaltonen is also coming to Daun. He will be at the wheel of a faithful replica of his former Opel Kadett in the Safari version. Fabrizia Pons, Michèle Mouton's long-time co-driver and now one of the most successful female co-drivers ever, is also returning to the Volcanic Eifel. Last year, she had some problems switching to "Eifel mode" at the beginning. "Until then, I hadn't experienced any events without time scoring and such a relaxed atmosphere. But now that I've understood the system, I love it."
