The Audi museum mobile is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Audi Sport quattro. This legendary automobile was produced by the Ingolstadt-based premium manufacturer in 1983 and 1984 - in a total of just 214 units.
There were five colors to choose from at the time, and the sports car is now on display in these colors for visitors to the "Home of quattro" exhibition from October 15 to November 30, 2013.
The museum is also showing three motorsport cars that were newly developed for the Group B rally from the production model. The exhibition is on display from October 15 to November 30.
The "short one"
Tornado red, Alpine white, Copenhagen blue, malachite green and black - these were the colors of the Sport quattro, which made its debut at the 1983 International Motor Show in Frankfurt. The "short one", as it was often affectionately called, was bursting with high-performance technology. With its 306 hp, it was the most powerful German production car of its time. The development engineers managed the balancing act between a pure sports car with breathtaking performance data and a reliable road car.
The production car was a means to an end. Audi built it by hand a total of 214 times - 200 were necessary to homologate a new competition car in the World Rally Championship.
Production cars and rally cars combined
The competition versions were used in the infamous Group B of the World Rally Championship. The museum presents three of these horsepower monsters to its visitors: the Audi Sport quattro as a rally version from 1984, the Sport quattro S1 from 1985 and the record-breaking Audi Sport quattro S1 "Pikes Peak" from 1987.
"You won't see it again in this constellation any time soon," emphasizes Thomas Frank, Head of Audi Tradition. The "Home of quattro" exhibition at the Audi museum mobile is open daily from October 15 to November 30 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
