The first decade of the new millennium is full of formative technological innovations, including at Mercedes-Benz. Because 25 years ago, on March 21, 2000 in Sindelfingen, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class of the 203 model series celebrated its premiere at the start of the decade, setting off a technological firework display.
A truly successful model
25 years ago, the 203 model series quickly established itself on the market as a dynamic mid-range model. After the "190" (W 201) and the first C-Class (202 model series), it is radically redesigned in terms of both style and technology and impresses both the public and the trade press. By September 2006, two million vehicles had already been sold. Never before has the brand reached this milestone with a model series in such a short space of time.
Mercedes-Benz deliberately drew on characteristic elements of the S-Class 220 model series introduced in 1998 in its design. This can be seen in the front design as well as in the confidently styled rear end with its striking triangular tail lights. Many of the equipment features also originate from the S-Class. For example, the "Comand" operating and display system or the "Linguatronic" voice command function.
The 203 series emancipates itself from its predecessors with a longer wheelbase and distinctly narrow overhangs, as well as a more steeply raked windshield. Sophisticated aerodynamics give the saloon an excellent Cd value of 0.26 and an extremely low noise level in the interior. This is where the C-Class sets standards in its market segment.
In addition to the saloon (W 203), the 203 model series comprises two further variants: The sports coupé (CL 203) followed at the end of 2000 and the estate (S 203) in 2001. With the three equipment lines "Classic", "Elegance" and "Avantgarde", Mercedes-Benz sets individual accents in the 203 model series. The engines used are four- and five-cylinder in-line engines as well as V6 engines, offering up to an opulent 260 kW (354 hp) in the top-of-the-range C 32 AMG model with V6 engine and supercharging. Following the 2004 facelift, the C 55 AMG with its 270 kW (367 hp) V8 engine moves to the top of the model range. From fall 2002, the 4Matic all-wheel drive system is available as an option in combination with various engines.
Differentiated range
The engineers have given the 203 series great agility. A new, elaborate three-link front axle and the further developed space-link rear axle set standards in driving behavior. The new rack-and-pinion steering, which ideally complements the ambitious chassis with its precision, also contributes to this. Despite all these measures, Mercedes-Benz never loses sight of the outstanding ride and rolling comfort. High-strength sheet metal, additional stiffeners and reinforcements optimize body strength, which also has an effect on agility.
In the AMG models, the dynamic talents come into their own in a particularly harmonious way. In contemporary tests, various models of the 203 series impress with their excellent handling on the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. This C-Class even demonstrated its sporting and practical strengths in Formula 1: in Grand Prix races from 2004 to 2007, the Mercedes-Benz C 55 AMG Estate acted as the F1 Medical Car, providing rapid medical care in the event of accidents on the race track.
