The year is 1961 - a new era begins at Triumph with the TR4. Technically identical in many respects to its predecessor, the TR3, the new TR4 was launched with a completely new body design by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti. The body shape of the TR3 from the 1940s, with its long curved fender lines and low-cut doors, was a thing of the past. Michelotti designed a modern body with smooth flanks, only a slight hint of a hip curve on the rear fenders and a significantly higher beltline than the previous models. Initially equipped with a rigid rear axle and leaf springs - from 1965 as the TR4A with independent suspension and semi-trailing arm rear axle, with the suffix "IRS" (Independend Rear Suspension), the TR4A was now much more comfortable and safer to drive. An easy-to-operate convertible top and crank windows instead of the plug-in windows of its predecessor made the TR4 a contemporary, elegant sports car. The 4-cylinder engine familiar from the TR3 was enlarged to 2,138 cc and produced 103 hp and the now fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox could be ordered with optional electrically selectable overdrive. From 1967, Triumph expanded the engine range to include an in-line six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2.5 liters (TR5 / 250) - production ended in 1968 - the TR6 was waiting in the wings to replace the TR4.
The TR4A IRS in question, which we are offering here, was completely restored "frame-off" in Austria at the beginning of the 2000s. The body was separated from the frame and everything that could no longer be saved was overhauled, blasted, painted and replaced. Engine, gearbox, axles, electrics - all done by experts - the rebuild is photo-documented. The vehicle still has very good gap dimensions and surfaces, very good paint quality, which underlines the quality of the restoration. Although the artwork was carried out around 25 years ago, the vehicle has only slight signs of wear and is in above-average condition. The TR runs and drives very well and has no thermal problems even under load and at high temperatures. Regularly serviced - no repair backlog - get in, drive off and enjoy! TÜV / §57a inspection until 05/2027 - Austrian registration as a historic vehicle.
