In Paris in the 1960s, change was sweeping through the streets: Fashion, art and technology merged to create a new zeitgeist. It was precisely in this era that a car rolled down the boulevards that not only caused a stir, but was also considered a work of art on wheels - the Citroën DS 21 Cabrio.
The history of the DS actually began in 1955 with the presentation of the Citroën DS 19 saloon at the Paris Motor Show. There, the avant-garde vehicle with its futuristic design and pioneering technology caused quite a stir: hydro-pneumatic suspension, power steering, front disc brakes - all as standard. No wonder the press soon dubbed the car "La Déesse" - the goddess.
But what was still missing was that certain flair of freedom - a DS without a roof.
This is where Henri Chapron, a French coachbuilder who specialized in luxurious conversions, came into play. From 1960, Chapron began to transform the saloon into an elegant convertible - initially on his own initiative. His creations bore illustrious names such as Croisette, Le Caddy or Palm Beach.
Citroën soon recognized the potential and entered into a partnership with Chapron. From 1961, the official Citroën DS Cabriolet d'Usine - the factory convertible - was created. And from 1965 came the highlight: the DS 21 Cabriolet, equipped with a 2.1-liter engine and a subtle facelift.
The DS 21 Cabrio seemingly united opposites, as despite the open body, the hydropneumatics - for those not in the know, the suspension system - was retained. The convertible thus floated over all bumps like the saloon.
The transmission was also different, because instead of a classic gearbox, the vehicle had a hydraulically operated gearshift without a clutch pedal. And of course the design:
The flowing lines, the retractable door handles, the soft chrome - the DS 21 Cabrio was a fashion statement.
Between 1961 and 1971, only around 1,365 examples of the official DS Cabriolet were built - a limited number of them as the DS 21 Cabriolet. Each vehicle was hand-built by Chapron. No wonder, then, that today these vehicles are among the most valuable and sought-after classics in automotive history.
The DS Cabriolet quickly found fans in high society: actors, politicians, designers - everyone wanted a piece of this French elegance. Even Charles de Gaulle had himself chauffeured in a specially extended version. The DS Cabrio appears again and again in films as a symbol of style and nonchalance.
Today, the Citroën DS 21 Cabriolet is more than just a classic car - it is a time capsule of French modernity. It embodies the innovative spirit of a brand that dared to put design above convention and rethink technology.
We present to you a DS 21 Cabrio, which was highly professionally converted in 2017 and is in excellent condition.
The original vehicle was a DS saloon that saw the light of day in 1969. At the time, the owner had opted for a 5-speed manual gearbox and a black leather interior, for example, while retaining the classic dashboard with Jäger instruments. After the conversion, the car rolled through the country with a total of 9581 kilometers driven, an extraordinary driving pleasure is waiting for you.
