Volkswagen began to completely revamp its product range with the Passat. As the first model, the Passat carried particular weight. Although closely related to the Audi 80, the Wolfsburg variant with a hatchback or estate offered a welcome alternative and ultimately sold better than the Audi. Audi had developed a remarkable dynamic at the end of the 1960s. Under chief developer Ludwig Krauss, the basic elements that would one day save VW from ruin were created in Ingolstadt.
