In 1987, Volkswagen almost beat the Audi Quattro on Pikes Peak - with a Golf. However, the racing version had little in common with the well-behaved off-the-shelf compact car. With an additional engine in front of the rear axle, there was certainly no lack of propulsion. This report describes the twin-engined Golf and shows it in many pictures.

In 1989, the Golf Rallye was the first model to receive the newly developed G60 engine with a larger G-charger. However, the Sport Golf, which was intended as a homologation model, was a flop. Shortly afterwards, the engine found its way under the hood of the Golf GTI, which breathed the much-missed sportiness back into the famous abbreviation. The 210 PS Golf Limited even surpassed this goal with a vengeance. However, only a few were able to enjoy the über-Golf. Four-wheel drive was no longer new at Volkswagen in 1989, but the fact that the VW Golf was raised and given a brute off-road vehicle look was still something of a sensation. The result even went into series production and drove quite convincingly, even if the high-traction VW Golf Country was more suitable for asphalt and gravel than for rough terrain.
