Many memories of a fortnight's drive through Germany in a 'Triumph TR 2' remain vivid: the deep, powerful roar when the two-liter engine exceeds 2000 rpm; the astonished faces in the rear-view mirror when driving through towns; the pressure on the back when the accelerator pedal is depressed - even at 130 km/h; and a speed on the autobahn that very few other cars can achieve. This is a car that delights the heart and satisfies the sense of self! A car in which two people can travel quickly and safely. The Hobby report from 1955 is one of the first published driving experiences in German.
In 1952, Triumph presented a new sports car, which was a miscarriage at the first attempt. But the company was not deterred, continued to develop and presented the TR2 in 1953 and the TR3 two years later, creating a first-class sales success. To this day, the TR2/3 models are popular English roadsters with a reputation for robustness. This report portrays a Triumph TR3 from 1953 and tells the adventurous story of the TR3, of which over 85,000 were built, illustrated with almost 90 historical and current pictures and four original brochures.
In 1959, the range of sports cars on offer was still quite limited. The magazine 'hobby' counted around 30 models and the comparison fitted onto just a few magazine pages. The author Werner Oswald saw the reason for the comparatively small number of models on offer in the transition to self-supporting bodies and the need for rationalization. In 1961, the magazine 'hobby' "cross-examined" affordable sports cars. Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, Fiat 1500 Spider, MG A, MG A Twin Cam, Triumph TR 3, Porsche 1600 and 1600 S, as well as Sunbeam Alpine and Mercedes-Benz 190 SL were contrasted and compared. And the winner? Read for yourself! Let's just say that although the most expensive car was almost twice as expensive as the cheapest, the best sports car scored just under 3% better than the worst. As early as 1955, when the Triumph TR3 had just been launched as the successor to the TR2, the manufacturer was already thinking about its successor. The TR4 was not presented until 1961, but in between interesting prototypes, fast racing cars and some special models were produced that have almost been forgotten. This report looks back on the period from 1955 to 1961 and tells part of the development history of the Triumph TR4, illustrated with photos that have never been shown before.
There was actually no urgent reason to replace the Triumph TR 3. Nevertheless, the British worked intensively with the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti to modernize the roadster. The result was the TR 4, an all-round successful vehicle that sold a good 68,000 units and still makes the hearts of classic car fans beat faster today. This report looks back at the history of TR 4 vehicles and shows an unrestored example from 1962 in detail, including sales brochure, price list and historical photos.
The TR series had already been offering rustic roadster driving fun for almost a decade when the TR4 appeared in 1961. In comparison to its predecessor, the swiftly curved TR3A, the sports car designed by Michelotti was much more angular and practical. Despite its more modern look, however, the TR4 could not deny its roots, and the Brit liked to dance on uneven surfaces. Was it forgiven for its character flaws in the test at the time?
