The Steyr-Puch Haflinger is probably the automobile that comes closest to a mountain goat. With four lock-synchronized gears and an optional crawling gear, virtually no incline can stop it. Its compact dimensions make it agile enough to master even the steepest bends in the terrain and the high ground clearance means it never touches down. This was also the view of hobby magazine, which tested the Haflinger extensively off-road in 1962, which is reproduced in the original wording of this article.
At the beginning of the sixties, Steyr-Puch built an independent version of the Fiat 500. In keeping with tradition, an air-cooled four-stroke boxer two-cylinder engine was installed, which accelerated the small car to an impressive 100 km/h and was great fun to drive. Only the price stood in the way of widespread distribution. This report contains the original wording of the "hobby" report from 1962, supplemented with pictures from the time.
A licensed version of the Fiat 500 was built in Graz from 1957, which shared little more than the bodyshell with the original. Up to 40 hp from a two-cylinder boxer engine made the small Steyr-Puch an Abarth competitor. Between 1959 and 1974, Steyr-Puch built 16,647 Haflingers. All of these lightweight off-road vehicles had two driven axles. Not enough, decided a Haflinger fan, and had a three-axle Haflinger with steering wheels built. The result, called the 706, is impressive, as this report with extensive pictures and background history shows.
Long before luxurious boulevard SUVs began to flood our roads, an off-road vehicle was launched in 1979 whose external shape has only changed slightly to this day: The Puch and Mercedes-Benz G. Almost unbeatable on rough terrain, equipped with two rigid axles until 2018, appreciated by foresters, hunters, farmers and the military in countless versions, today it is, so to speak, the German equivalent of the Land Rover Defender or the Range Rover of the first series.
