With the king-shaft four-cylinder engine, Porsche broke new ground in engine construction and laid the foundations for countless motorsport successes. The first driving tests were carried out in secret, with only the changed sound betraying the new engine. Richard von Frankenberg was allowed to take a seat in the Porsche 550 Spyder at an early stage and his comparisons with the standard cars of the time are impressive and instructive. The Porsche 550/1500RS was Porsche's first mid-engined car since the Type 1. The 90 vehicles produced (1953-1957) kept the Porsche flag flying high and won many overall and class victories. Today, the original 550 is almost impossible to buy.
After 50 years or more, even an original is usually no longer really "original". This is especially true for racing cars, which were constantly modified, rebuilt and repaired during their active time in order to remain competitive.
