In 1959, the range of sports cars on offer was still quite limited. The magazine 'hobby' counted around 30 models and the comparison fitted onto just a few magazine pages. The author Werner Oswald saw the reason for the comparatively small number of models on offer in the transition to self-supporting bodies and the need for rationalization. Porsche and Abarth - two world-famous automobile manufacturers that are inextricably linked to the history of motorsport. What is less well known is that there were close business ties between the two companies at times, dating back to the early post-war years. The Porsche Carrera Abarth, based on the 356, was an exceptionally competitive sports car, which is described in detail here.
In 1960, 75 hp was enough for the Porsche 356 to achieve a top speed of over 170 km/h and the label of being a real sports car. The car from Zuffenhausen was not cheap, but thanks to high-quality production and a lot of precision work on the technology, it was worth the money, according to the test drivers of the time. This article reproduces the wording of the test report, which is now over 60 years old, unaltered, supplemented by historical photographs from the time.
